One of the important issues in the payment of Zakat is the matter of jointly owned wealth—how should Zakat be paid on assets that are owned by more than one individual? Similarly, in the case of a company in which multiple people are shareholders, how should Zakat be calculated and paid on the company’s Zakatable assets? Furthermore, if someone owns shares in a company, how should the shareholder pay Zakat on those shares? These are pressing contemporary issues that require examination in light of Islamic jurisprudence. This paper discusses these significant topics in detail. Before addressing these issues, it is essential to understand the position of the classical Islamic jurists regarding Zakat on jointly owned wealth. Therefore, the paper first presents their opinions on this foundational matter.
