Tasawwuf occupies an important place in the Islamic tradition as a discipline concerned with purification of the soul, reform of the heart, sincerity, self-discipline and moral character. In the contemporary world, material development has expanded rapidly, but societies continue to face serious moral and social problems such as dishonesty, greed, envy, intolerance, anger, family disputes, corruption, selfishness and disregard for the rights of others. These problems cannot be adequately addressed through external laws alone because many of their roots lie within the human personality. This article examines the need and importance of Tasawwuf in the contemporary era with particular reference to the reformative thought of the scholars of Deoband and especially Mawlana Ashraf Ali Thanawi. The study highlights the intellectual and spiritual connection between Haji Imdadullah Muhajir Makki, Mawlana Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi, Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi, Mawlana Ashraf Ali Thanawi and Mawlana Husayn Ahmad Madani. It argues that, in the thought of these scholars, Tasawwuf was not an isolated spiritual practice but a process of ethical reform under the guidance of the Qur'an and Sunnah. Special attention is given to Thanawi's emphasis on Shari'ah, self-purification, moral training, social etiquette, rights of people and practical reform. The article concludes that a balanced understanding of Tasawwuf can contribute to contemporary social reform by treating the inner causes of social evils and developing honesty, humility, patience, forgiveness, moderation, compassion and responsibility.
