Abstract

Institutional leadership is a critical factor in the effectiveness, stability, and sustainable development of any organization. In the contemporary context, leadership is generally examined through the perspectives of management, organizational behavior, professional competence, accountability, and institutional efficiency. The Prophetic Sunnah ﷺ, however, presents leadership as a responsibility and trust rather than merely a position of authority or a means of personal prestige. This study examines the principles of institutional leadership in the light of the Prophetic traditions and compares them with selected concepts of modern leadership and management. The study is based primarily on a critical and analytical examination of relevant Ahadith, classical commentaries on Hadith, and the works of prominent Muslim scholars. The research identifies several fundamental principles of Prophetic institutional leadership, including responsibility and accountability, competence and integrity, avoidance of the pursuit of authority, consultation, delegation of responsibilities according to individual capabilities, administrative flexibility, financial transparency, prevention of conflicts of interest, and protection of employees’ rights. Particular attention is given to the traditions concerning leadership as a trust, the appointment of competent individuals, the advice of the Prophet ﷺ to Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه, the practice of consultation, and the incident of Ibn al-Lutbiyyah concerning official gifts and financial accountability. These traditions demonstrate that personal piety, although essential, cannot by itself serve as the sole criterion for institutional leadership; rather, leadership requires an appropriate combination of moral integrity, competence, responsibility, and administrative ability. The comparative analysis further shows that several contemporary leadership concepts, such as servant leadership, participative leadership, delegation, ethical leadership, accountability, and conflict-of-interest management, have meaningful parallels in the Prophetic framework. At the same time, Prophetic leadership goes beyond organizational efficiency by linking institutional responsibility with moral consciousness, divine accountability, justice, and concern for human welfare. The study concludes that the Prophetic model offers a comprehensive and ethically grounded framework for institutional leadership in which authority is understood as a trust, decision-making is supported by consultation, responsibilities are entrusted to competent and trustworthy individuals, and institutional resources and employees’ rights are protected. The findings suggest that the principles derived from the Prophetic Sunnah ﷺ can provide a valuable ethical and conceptual foundation for improving leadership practices in contemporary institutions.
