The contemporary Muslim world is witnessing a growing decline in the quality, consistency, and spiritual consciousness of religious observance. While acts of worship (عبادات) remain outwardly practiced by many, tendencies of negligence (غفلت) and Dishonesty (Tatfeef تطفیف)-understood not merely as deficiency in commercial dealings but as the incomplete or careless fulfillment of divinely prescribed obligations-have increasingly permeated the sphere of worship. This study examines the emerging patterns of negligence and Dishonesty in acts of worship within contemporary society through an Islamic perspective. Drawing upon the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the interpretations of classical and contemporary Muslim scholars, the article explores the conceptual foundations of Negligence and Dishonesty, identifies their manifestations in essential acts of worship such as prayer, fasting, Zakāh (Zakat زکوٰۃ), and pilgrimage, and analyzes the moral, spiritual, and social factors contributing to their prevalence.
Employing a qualitative and analytical research methodology based on primary Islamic sources and relevant scholarly literature, the study argues that negligence in worship is not merely an individual spiritual weakness but a phenomenon with profound ethical and societal implications. The findings indicate that weakening religious consciousness, materialistic lifestyles, inadequate religious education, and the influence of modern socio-cultural challenges have significantly contributed to the deterioration in the quality of worship. The article concludes by proposing comprehensive remedial measures rooted in Islamic teachings, including strengthening faith-based education, reviving spiritual accountability (تقویٰ و احسان), promoting family and institutional religious guidance, and fostering collective awareness of the comprehensive objectives of worship. It emphasizes that restoring sincerity, excellence, and completeness in worship is essential for both individual spiritual development and the moral reform of contemporary Muslim society.
