Abstract

This paper aims at giving the true picture of Urdu Elegy writing in the Subcontinent, then it proceeds towards giving details of the historical background of Urdu Elegy writing. The paper begins by discussing the characteristics of the Elegic poetry of prominent Urdu Elegy writers of the Subcontinent. Some Samples of Meer Zamir, Meer Anees, and Mirza Dabeer's elegies have been presented in this article. Salient features of Urdu obituaries of the subcontinent have been narrated in this article. Names of prominent Elegies writers of Karachi, Quetta, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Jhang, Bhakar, Multan, and Bahawalpur, and also discussed the different types of Urdu elegies in this paper. The research also tackles the current situation of Urdu Elegy literature and its reception in modern culture. It addresses the issues encountered by modern Elegy writers, particularly the emergence of digital media and shifting literary preferences. Additionally, the research investigates how Elegies continue to link people across diverse parts of the Subcontinent, building a shared cultural legacy and encouraging emotional catharsis. Overall, this thorough research strives to give useful insights into the Urdu Elegy tradition's history, its ongoing relevance, and its continual response to the constantly shifting rhythms of the Subcontinent's literary scene. By discovering the genuine spirit of Urdu Elegy literature, this research contributes to maintaining and promoting this art form for decades to come.
